Sub-genre convections- plots & storylines

13.

Name of film: Mean Girls
Sub-genre: HIgh School

What is the key plot idea introduced in the title sequence?

The title sequence shows that Katie is new and trying to adapt to life at school as she is different from everyone else. It shows her transition from lifestyle in Africa to America as she lived and almost grew up there because of her parents as they are zoologists. As she goes to her first day, she faces many obstacles and is bullied and isolated by the different social groups and ends up being left all alone.

In what order is the storyline introduced?

Two parents are talking to the camera from Katie's view and are asking her if she is ready for school life. They start crying and taking pictures before she goes to school as if she is a 5 year old and this takes place in front of their house. It then shows clips of Katie's past life from when she used to live in Africa and when she was younger and bing homeschooled. She then walks away from her parents, almost getting hit by a school bus and then walks through the front school field towards school doors through all the different social groups dodging different obstacles. She gets to class and there are no available seats, bumps into a teacher and spills coffee all over her, and the class laughs. The principle arrives and walks in on the teacher taking her top off, they have a flirtatious conversation about how their summer was; he then introduces her to the class.
